War Eagle Motorsports Shop Move

We are expanding!

As Auburn Formula SAE continues to grow our physical confines must grow as well.  Over the past several years we have acquired new members, new parts, new cars, and new machinery (most notably our Haas CNC), all of which our current shop space is no longer able to contain.

For this reason, we have been given additional space to share with the other half of War Eagle Motorsports – Baja SAE.  The two teams will now share our current shop in Wilmore Laboratory and a second, larger shop in the Engineering Shop Buildings across the street.

Two weeks ago this new space was much worse than dilapidated, and we had little hope that it would ever be satisfactory.  After several weekends of TLC, however, we are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel.  The Baja and Formula teams joined forces to tear down unnecessary partitions and paint the floor, walls, and ceilings.  This new space will be divided into three sections.  Half of the room will be a dedicated machine shop with one Haas CNC mill, three Bridgeport traditional mills, two lathes, two band saws, and a sandblasting cabinet.  This portion of the room holds particular promise for increasing efficiency and productivity as we have never before had such large space dedicated only to machining.  The other half of the room is split equally between Baja and Formula, each team getting space for storage cabinets and car assembly.

The Wilmore shop will be a designated “hot work” area to be used for welding, grinding, and anything else that makes sparks or excessive heat.  Both teams will have their own construction table, welder and tools, and storage space.  There will be a common assembly/jig table and other common tools.

Baja and Formula will also now be sharing office space.  The new office will be next door to the machine shop, with five work stations for Formula and three for Baja.  This equates to slightly more office space than we’ve had in the past and we hope to use some of the extra room to expand our library.  We have already purchased new bookshelves and are working on acquiring new reference materials to fill them.

These new developments constitute a big change for our team, and while we are slightly chagrined at losing our private space we are working hard to make these new arrangements work out to our advantage.
