Formula SAE is a collegiate design series that allows college students an opportunity to design, build, and race a formula-style racecar against other college students from more than 500 colleges and universities worldwide. Each team must build a new car every year from the ground up. With the exception of safety regulations placed on the engine and frame of the car, the series rules are open, allowing students to show their creativity through the design of the car.
Each Formula SAE competition consists of static and dynamic events which are assigned a certain point value. The Static Events (Design, Presentation, Cost) are all "off-track" events that test the team's design, ability to sell a production idea to a group of business managers, and ability to prove the cost effective aspect of the project. The Dynamic Events (Skidpad, Acceleration, Autocross, Fuel Economy, Endurance) are all "on-track" events. These events test the cars handling, acceleration, race-course maneuverability, fuel economy, and reliability. Students develop their engineering, design, and business skills and gain valuable racing experience through their involvement in the series. Winning a FSAE competition is often more related to engineering professionalism than actually crossing the finish line first.
Auburn Formula SAE aims to meet all team deadlines through better project management allowing the team to build a faster, more reliable race car aimed at finishing in the top 10 at Formula SAE Michigan and other SAE sanctioned competitions worldwide.
