ASCE Student Chapters and Clubs

General Information

American Society of Civil Engineers Student Membership is the "first step" toward a career as a Civil Engineer. When you join ASCE, you'll keep abreast of the latest advances in the field and participate in fun and educational activities. Most importantly, you'll develop friendships with fellow students that will last throughout your career and your life.

AU STUDENT CHAPTER ASCE
The Auburn University Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers was the first ASCE Student Chapter founded in the Deep South and one of the first in the nation. Since our founding in 1921 we have been a leader within the ranks of ASCE Student Chapters and on Auburn University's campus. With a membership of over 75 students and growing we are among the larger and more active campus groups at Auburn. We hope that you will take a look around our website and attend a meeting soon. We look forward to you becoming an active member of our organization. If you have any question please don’t hesitate to talk to an ASCE officer or member or e-mail us at: asce@eng.auburn.edu

INTERCOLLEGIATE COMPETITIONS
Sometimes you need a creative outlet from the demands of your classes. ASCE Student Chapter Competitions allow you to use your technical skills on unique projects. Students build, design and race in concrete canoes (yes, you can make concrete float). The structural engineer in you can construct a 20-foot-long steel bridge and see how well it stands up to various loads. Other challenging activities include balsa wood and timber bridge building events, hydro power design and unique local projects, such as spaghetti bridge building and egg drop contests. The Auburn University Chapter is part of the Southeast Region of Student Chapters/Clubs and always participates in the Regional Competitions. Also, the canoe used in the 1999 Concrete Canoe Races in Birmingham, Alabama is on display. The canoe is located in the 1st floor Harbert Center lobby.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
Sporting events, parties, study groups and informal gatherings are all part of ASCE. Academic demands are made easier by having these events to look forward to while cultivating friendships that last a lifetime. Every semester the Auburn Student Chapter has a picnic featuring food, fellowship and sports. Especially looked forward to is the ASCE golf tournament held in the Fall.

FIELD TRIPS
The AU ASCE chapter often goes on guided field trips to engineering projects, some of which are still under construction and closed to outsiders. In addition, you may visit major projects already in operation and be escorted by practicing engineers who can explain the details of their work. Recent fieldtrips taken by the Auburn University Chapter include Regional Competitions, Alabama Power's Lake Martin Dam, a local landfill, Alabama Department of Transportation headquarters and field projects, the Auburn-Opelika Airport expansion, the rebuilding of the 2nd Avenue Bridge in Opelika, Robert F. Henry Lock and Dam, Maxwell Air Force Base hospital construction and Thurlow Dam.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
Civil Engineering is a career which makes a lasting, positive impact on society. In that spirit, ASCE Student Chapters organize public service projects where students apply their classroom skills to real life situations. As a member of ASCE you can work on projects similar to those found in the professional workplace. In October of 2006 a group of students from the Auburn University Student Chapter helped complete work on Habitat for Humanity, located in Auburn, Alabama.

SCHOLARSHIPS/FELLOWSHIPS
ASCE awards over $75,000 a year in student scholarships, fellowships and prizes, most of which are available only to National Student Members. One of the most popular scholarships offered is the Samuel Fletcher Tapman Scholarship. Three applicants from each of the Society's four Zones (total of 12) may be selected to win $1,500 each, toward tuition expenses.
