ASCE Student Regional Conference

(i.e. competitions)

Frequently Asked Questions

What are these competitions I keep seeing posters about?

Actually, the competitions refer to the Southeastern Regional Conference Auburn participates in every year. Student ASCE Chapters from various southeastern schools, gather and battle head to head in a variety of subjects. It is always a blast, and taking part in different fields will help you to get a head start on some particular classes in the Civil Engineering curriculum.

What types of competitions are there?

The Regional Conference usually has about 9 different competitions students can compete in. There are 11 all together, but the host school can decided which particular events to offer. These include Surveying, Environmental, Concrete Canoe, Geotechnical, Concrete, Visual Presentation, Technical Paper, Mystery competition, Steel Bridge, Balsa Wood Bridge, and T-shirt Design competitions.

But I haven't taken any of those classes, can I still participate?

Absolutely!! We love to have anyone and everyone participate. This is especially a great opportunity for the freshmen and sophomores to get involved. They will get hands on experience and basics that will aid in understanding difficult subjects such as soils, materials, water and wastewater treatment, etc. Juniors, Seniors, and Graduate students who have already taken these classes usually head up the commitees for each project. With a mixture of both underclass and upperclass students, it will be easier to tranfer knowledge to the next group of participants. Plus, ideas are constantly revised so we have a better chance at winning each competition the following year.

It sounds cool, but how can I find out more?

Visitors and prospective members are always welcome to our general and social meetings. In the general meetings, before the speaker is introduced, plans for the upcoming Regional Conference are introduced and discussed. This would be the best place for you to learn more about the competitions. BUT, if you cannot make the meetings, feel free to email ASCE and we will do our best to answer your questions.
