Scholarships announced

1,000th student graduates from MITE

To celebrate its twentieth year of operation, the College of Engineering has established three $1,000, one-year scholarships to be awarded to qualified students who attend Auburn's Minority Introduction to Engineering (MITE) program, Dean William Walker has announced.

The scholarships will be awarded on a continuing basis, with three students selected every summer, Walker explained. They will be designated to qualified minority students who attend the MITE program; apply and are accepted to Auburn University; and elect to study engineering.

The College of Engineering hosted three MITE sessions over the summer, in week-long programs that brought a total of 75 top minority high school students to the Auburn campus. Students were exposed to the ambience of a college environment, and offered hands-on experiences in engineering activities.

"This year was significant in the fact that the number of students participating in the program over the past 20 years surpassed one thousand," David Cicci, MITE program director and a member of the aerospace engineering faculty, explains.

"The purpose of these programs has always been to encourage outstanding minority students to pursue their dreams, and at the same time get them to consider Auburn as their college home.

"Engineering allows them to blend math, science and technology into an education that opens the kinds of opportunities that will be the growth areas of the coming century," Cicci adds. "At the same time, we are able to present an exciting, yet comfortable setting where they can meet friends and mentors. This is an experience that is both challenging and fun."
