The College of Engineering is hosting its second annual alumni homecoming barbecue this fall on Saturday, Oct. 11, when the Tigers meet Louisiana Tech in Jordan-Hare stadium.
"The barbecue will be held in conjunction this year with a special event - the rededication of Wilmore Laboratories," Engineering Dean William F. Walker notes.
The day will begin with registration on the Harbert Engineering Center/Aerospace Engineering Building's lower patio at 9 a.m. Departmental tours will also leave from the patio area, through noon. The rededication of Wilmore will take place from 10-10:30 a.m., with the barbecue scheduled from 10:30 through 12:30 p.m. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
Last year's barbecue was a well attended event, with hundreds of Auburn engineering grads sharing memories and bringing each other up to date on family and friends. A blue- grass band is again scheduled for entertainment this fall.
The rededication of Wil-more Laboratories will signal the beginning of the structure's transformation into an updated facility that will serve College of Engineering students and faculty well into the next century.
"Wilmore was built in 1949, and has served its purpose admirably," Dean Walker has said of the laboratories that have been a home to students from every engineering discipline at some point in its existence.
"It was built around the technologies that were present some 50 years ago, however, and our needs tomorrow demand new and updated facilities. This $12 million renovation will address these demands, and at the same time, bring the building into compliance with current safety codes and flexibility requirements. We're very excited that this project is now becoming a reality."
Depending on access, it may well be the last chance for alumni to see the venerable facility as it once was. In addition, tours of the college's other facilities will be made available by members of the Cupola Society and student professional groups.
A registration form for the event can be found on the inside back cover, and facsimiles are acceptable as well. Send yours in today, and become a part of an exciting, memorable weekend.
