Alumni reunion October 11

Hundreds of Auburn Engineering alumni met for the college's first homecoming reunion last year, making the event such a success it is being repeated this fall during the October 11 homecoming football weekend. To register for the weekend's activities, send in your registration now by filling out the form on page 15 in this issue of the newsletter. The staging point for the celebration is on the Aerospace Building/Harbert Engineering Center patio. We look forward to seeing you, your family and friends on campus again!

1000 graduates

WSFA television reporter Daphne Young interviews Minority Introduction to Engineering (MITE) graduate Robert Foster from Greenville, S.C., as his mother Jacqueline looks on. Robert, the program's 1,000th graduate, was one of 75 students enrolled in MITE this summer, marking its twentieth year of operation. In conjunction with the event, Engineering Dean William F. Walker announced the creation of three $1,000 scholarships to be awarded to MITE students who enroll in engineering at Auburn.

Formula racer

Students overcame some last-minute obstacles to finish 29th out of 90 teams in a collegiate car design competition at the Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan. It was only the second year Auburn entered a car in the competition, which was sponsored by various car manufacturers, who used the event to interview students for prospective jobs. Auburn's team competed against top engineering schools such as Cornell, Georgia Tech, Mississippi State and Penn State.

Field trip!

Excited fifth-graders from Auburn's Drake elementary school were informed and entertained by Sushil Bhavnani of the mechanical engineering faculty, who explained to them how the solar car raced by Auburn students works. Bhavnani also pointed out that the Sol of Auburn is the first - and only - solar car registered in the state of Alabama.
