Civil and Environmental Engineering postdoctoral researcher receives computational hydraulic award

Md Fahim Salek, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has been honored with the 2024 Paul F. Boulos Excellence in Computational Hydraulics/Hydrology Award. The award is jointly presented by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists (AAEES) and the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP).

Salek earned his civil and environmental engineer doctoral degree from Auburn in 2023. His current research focuses on regional caprock formations and understanding mineral reaction kinetics in caprock fractures related to CO2 sequestration.

"I am truly honored to be the recipient of this award this year. I am thankful to AAEES and AEESP for recognizing my potential,” Salek said. “I am especially indebted to my supervisor, Dr. Lauren Beckingham (W. Allen and Martha Reed Associate Professor in civil and environmental engineering) for her invaluable support and guidance. Without her leadership, this achievement would not have been possible.”

The Paul F. Boulos Excellence in Computational Hydraulics/Hydrology Award recognizes those whose research contributes to computational hydraulics and hydrology.

Salek will receive $1,500 and a plaque for being selected. He will also receive a travel allotment to attend the American Academy of Environmental Engineers & Scientists Excellence in Environmental Engineering and Science Awards Luncheon on April 11.

Beckingham said this award is well-deserved for Salek.

“Fahim is a highly committed and skilled researcher, and his work is of the highest quality,” Beckingham said. “He is also an excellent team member and has the qualities favorable for a leader in this field. We are happy to have him in our group.”
