Mark Byrne, Daniel F. and Josephine Breeden professor in Auburn University’s Department of Chemical Engineering, has been elected to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering’s (AIMBE) College of Fellows.
The AIMBE College of Fellows includes nearly 1,000 peer-nominated fellows who are outstanding bioengineers in academia, industry and government, and comprise the top 2 percent of their field. Membership in the College of Fellows is one of the highest honors in the scientific community, and is awarded to those who have distinguished themselves through extraordinary leadership and significant contributions to the field of biological engineering.
"Dr. Byrne's election into the College of Fellows is a significant achievement, given what it represents in terms of his meaningful contributions to the field of biomedical engineering,” said Christopher Roberts, chair of Auburn's Department of Chemical Engineering. “His induction to this esteemed group brings tremendous recognition to his efforts and that of his entire research team. I offer my sincere congratulations to Dr. Byrne."
Byrne is recognized for his research and development of biomaterials and medical devices that deliver medicine more effectively and conveniently. Byrne is an expert in the field of biomimetic, bioinspired, and biohybrid biomaterials, as well as controlled therapeutic delivery, polymer engineering and biomedical devices. He is co-founder and chief technical officer of OcuMedic Inc., a company based in Auburn that develops groundbreaking methods of drug delivery based on Byrne's cutting-edge research.
"I am honored and humbled to be elected to the College of Fellows of AIMBE, and I share this recognition with all the graduate and undergraduate students who have worked with me," said Byrne.
Founded in 1991, AIMBE is the leading advocacy group for medical and biological engineering. Based in Washington D.C., AIMBE promotes awareness of the technological contributions made bioengineers to increase worldwide quality of life, such as improved medical care and access to higher quality food. The institute also supports public policies that further advancements in bioengineering, and works to increase national interest in science, engineering and education.
