Stephen Walls at a recent conference for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers

Stephen Walls, senior in mechanical engineering at Auburn University, has been selected as one of 120 undergraduate students to conduct a 10-week summer internship with the Naval Research Enterprise Intern Program (NREIP). Walls' paid internship with the U.S. Navy's marine mammal program at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center-Pacific in San Diego will focus on working with dolphins and other marine mammals, teaching them to locate and mark underwater mines. As an intern, Walls will help create mine-marking devices for marine mammals to use or aid in the design and construction of a marine mammal facility near Seattle.

A native of Augusta, Ga., Walls is a member the University Honors College and serves as the program chair and webmaster for Auburn's American Society of Mechanical Engineers student chapter.
