Liu named 2009 Outstanding Materials Engineering Alum

Jiayan "Johnny" Liu, chairman and CEO of Dutech Holdings Limited, has been named the 2009 Outstanding Materials Engineering Alumnus by the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering at Auburn University.

"Johnny has enjoyed a very successful career in his field," says Bryan Chin, materials engineering chair. "We are proud that he is a member of the Auburn Engineering family and we look forward to his continued involvement with the program."

Liu received his doctorate in materials engineering from Auburn in 1993. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in materials engineering from Shanghai Jiaotong University in 1983 and 1986, respectively.

After his graduation from Auburn, Liu became vice president of international operations for Thermal Dynamics. In 2001, he moved to a position as chief operating officer in Asia for Murray Inc., where he was responsible for the manufacturing and sales of more than $100 million in homecare products.

Since 2004, Liu has held his current position with Dutech Holdings Limited, the world's largest ATM safe manufacturer, producing more than 150,000 ATM safes, bank safes and other high security products. Dutech Holdings listed on Singapore's main board on Aug. 2, 2008. Under Liu's leadership, Dutech was identified in September 2008 as one of Asia's top 200 growth companies by Forbes magazine, and in October of that same year Dutech was selected as one of best 50 Chinese companies for the next 30 years by Founder magazine.

With more than 20 publications and six patents, Liu was honored as one of the top 10 enterprisers in the Jiangsu Province in 2004, and in 2007, he was selected as one of the top 10 young Chinese enterprisers by the Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs office. From 1999 to 2001, he served as a guest professor of materials science at Shanghai Jiaotong University.
