Hulya Kirkici, associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Auburn University, has been elected president of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society. Her term begins January 2009 and will expire in 2011.
IEEE is the primary international professional organization for electrical engineers. With more than 2,000 members, the Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS) is a subgroup focusing on gaseous, liquid and solid dielectric materials and electrical insulation systems for electrical, electronic and biological applications. Kirkici previously served as vice president and secretary of the society.
Kirkici received her bachelor's and master's degrees in physics from the Middle Eastern Technical University (METU). She received her doctorate in electrical engineering from the Polytechnic University in New York. She has been a faculty member at Auburn since 1993, also holding positions at the Weber Institute and NASA. Her research interests include plasma physics, pulsed power and electrical breakdown in vacuum and partial-vacuum environments.
