With funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering is hosting three NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) through its departments of Industrial and Systems Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Computer Science and Software Engineering. During the summer, participating undergraduate students will conduct research on NSF-funded topics. These include engineering; biological sciences; computer and information science and engineering; education and human resources; geosciences; international science and engineering; mathematical and physical sciences; and social, behavioral and economic sciences.
Ten students have been selected to participate in the eight-week summer session with the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering's REU in automotive manufacturing systems. This REU site focuses on automotive research related to manufacturing systems such as optimization, computer simulation, occupational safety, ergonomics, lean manufacturing and supply chain management.
The departments of Chemical Engineering and Computer Science and Software Engineering are hosting 10 students each for participation in 10-week REU programs. Chemical engineering participants will focus on micro/nano-structured materials, therapeutics and devices, while students working in computer science and software engineering will study wireless, pervasive and mobile computing.
REU programs expand students' participation in research and engage them in science- and engineering-related careers. These REU sites will help develop a diverse group of undergraduate participants from four-year institutions and community colleges that have had a limited opportunity to engage in research activities.
