Chai Yoo, professor emeritus in the Department of Civil Engineering, has been honored with the title of honorary member by the Structural Stability Research Council (SSRC) in recognition of his long-term membership in and contributions to the organization.
Yoo was elected a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2003. His research interests include the design and construction of buried conduits; design and fabrication of horizontally curved composite box girder bridges; and stability of thin-walled metal structures.
The SSRC was established in 1944 by the Engineering Foundation to review and resolve conflicting opinions and practices related to stability problems, and facilitate and promote economical and safe design. The council offers guidance to specification writers and practicing engineers by developing both simplified and refined calculation procedures for the solution of stability problems and assessing the limitations of these procedures.
