Chai H. "Jay" Yoo, professor emeritus in the Department of Civil Engineering, has been selected to receive the 2008 Shortridge Hardesty Award. The nominating committee cited Yoo's research and practical engineering efforts dealing with the strength and stability of thin-walled sections, especially as applied to bridge girders.

The Shortridge Hardesty Award is given annually to an individual who has contributed substantially in applying fundamental results of research to solution of practical engineering problems in the field of structural stability. This award was instituted in 1987 to honor the contributions of Shortridge Hardesty as first chair of the Column Research Council (CRC). The CRC was organized in 1944 at the recommendation of the ASCE Committee on Design of Structural Members and with the approval of the Structural Engineering Institute Executive Committee. The award nomination is made by the SEI Committee on Compression and Flexural Members.
