If you are interested in keeping track of how many times your web page has been viewed, you may add a counter to it. Our webmaster has created a counter for internal only use that guarantees if you page can show up, so will the counter. No more having that unsightly icon show up if a remote site is having trouble or waiting for your page to load a counter across the internet. There are many styles of digits to choose from to satisfy even the pickiest web developer. Ok, maybe not, but there ARE a ton of them.
How to add a counter to your page:
Note: If you would like to make a counter invisible you may select the first item on the "Numbers Page" as your style(none).
Open the URL http://www.eng.auburn.edu/cgi-bin/ctr.pl. (clicking this link will open another browser for you opened to the counter page so you can follow along with these instructions)
Fill in the URL for the page you would like keep count of.
For example, entering users/jimbob/resume.html for the URL if your username is jimbob would be correct to set up a counter on your resume. Any pages for which you would like a counter other than your resume, simply change resume.html to match the appropriate URL.
Enter a new password in the second box. Choose something simple to remember since you will need it to use it again later. Never use your engineering
account password for anything other than logging in to your engineering account- it's a security concern.
Click on Submit Request since the action defaults to "Initialize Access Counter". You will see a message showing that your counter initialization was successful if you have followed the instructions closely. Copy down the html given so that you can insert it into your web page later. If you get an error instead, click back on your browser and try again.
If you would like a different style of counter images, you may select from the "Numbers Page" link given on that page. (take a peek, they're neat)
Put the html line given on the "Initialization Success Page" in the html document you specified and the counter will register whenever someone loads your page. If you ever want to check your count or reset your counter, simply select that option instead of initialization at the bottom of the counter page.
By the way, this document has been accessed times.
(Counters don't count the number of users- just total number of loads)
