The team of Yolanda McMillian, Kenneth Rouse and Jamey White, graduate students in computer science and software engineering, has been chosen as the first runner up and best-of-class winner of the First AVIOS Speech Application Contest. Their application, "Speech Enabled Message Board for Disaster Victims," received high scores from the judges in the areas of usefulness, technical superiority, user friendliness and innovation. Tacibaht Turel, a doctoral student in integrated textile and apparel science, earned first place at the National Textile Center (NTC) Graduate Student Competition held February 26 during the NTC annual forum in Hilton Head, SC. Turel's presentation, "A Study of Gas Transport through Chemical Protective Materials," addressed concepts of permeation of gases through layered materials. Read full story
Shannon Haines, a senior in polymer and fiber engineering, has been selected to receive a $2,000 scholarship from the Association of Textile Industrial Engineers. The award recognizes outstanding scholastic achievement, leadership, character and potential service to industrial engineering and/or the textile industry. Read full story
Thirty chemical engineering students from Auburn participated in the Southern Regional Conference of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), held at the University of South Carolina. More than twenty colleges from around the southeast participated. Read full story
Of the estimated 100 students who graduate each year from the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering at Auburn University, only seven have graduated with perfect grade point averages over the past eight years. The next graduate likely to earn that honor is Michael Zabala who carries a very rare perfect GPA in arguably the university's most demanding major. But to his peers, this exceptional student merits admiration not just for academic excellence, but also for striving to live a well-rounded, balanced life which he achieves through active service in campus organizations.
