The Samuel Ginn College of Engineering hosts a variety of summer camps:
Computer Literacy Academy for Children (June 3-19) -- Designed to help children learn about computers and the Internet.
Participants will learn how to browse, navigate and search the web; use Microsoft
Office 2007 suite applications; design and publish a personal Web page using Microsoft
SharePoint Designer 2007; and how to program computers using cutting-edge educational
technology interactive applications. These include Pearson MyITLab, Carnegie Mellon
Alice, Lego Mindstorms, Microsoft Robotics, Computer Science Unplugged Activities,
Microsoft Interactive Educational Software Applications and computer software
and hardware designed for special needs children. The program, for the children
of AU employees and children with disabilities is taught by graduate students
along with AU faculty members Daniela Marghitu and Elizabeth Zylla-Jones.
TIGERs Camp (Rising 9th and 10th graders - June 15-20; Rising 7th and 8th graders - June
22-27) -- Designed to expose students in grades 7-10 to the world of engineering.
Engineers make the world a better place by designing things that make life easier,
safer or that protect the environment. Yet, studies show that middle school students
know very little about careers in engineering. Camp activities include workshops,
tours and lectures guided by engineers and engineering students who will answer
questions about what courses students need to take in middle and high school to
prepare them for success in college and a fulfilling career in engineering. Students
participate in a number of hands-on activities in a variety of engineering disciplines.
24-hour supervision is provided by experienced counselors. The camp will be conducted
by faculty, staff and students from the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering.
