This semester's seminar schedule was a busy one that brought a number of distinguished visitors to the campus as well as providing faculty and graduate students a venue for sharing results of their research. Here are some examples:
The Environmental and Water Resource (EWR) seminar series hosted by the Department of Civil Engineering recently hosted Edward Todd Urbansky, chemist and special projects head for the United States Air Force to discuss the environmental hazards of perchlorate.
Kermit Davis from the Department of Environmental Health at the University of Cincinnati was first spring seminar speaker for the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. His seminar, "Low Back Pain: A Comprehensive Research Approach to Minimizing It," addressed how the understanding of pain pathways and underlying injury mechanisms can lead to a reduction or elimination of lower back disorders in the workplace. Baohua Gu, a member of the senior research staff at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) delivered a lecture as part of the Environmental and Water Research Program in the Department of Civil Engineering on "Highly-Selective and Regenerable Ion Exchange for Perchlorate Remediation, Recovery and Environmental Forensics." The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering hosted a seminar by Jessie Godbey, program coordinator for the Occupational Safety and Health Program at Jacksonville State U. Godbey summarized her research on the effects of targeted behavior on employee safety, productivity and quality in two Southeast manufacturing facilties.
