Q: What is a Peer Advisor and how can they help me?

A: The Engineering Student Services Peer Advisors are a select group of students that serves as an essential part in serving our Pre-Engineering students. Peer Advisors work in close cooperation with the Engineering Student Services professional academic advising staff to provide a high level of service to our Pre-Engineering students. Our Peer Advisors assist students with understanding their major curriculum, providing information on academic policies and procedures, and assisting our Academic Advisors with mandatory advising and course registration. Q: What processes originate with your advisor?

A:

  • GAP : A GAP is the “Grade Adjustment Policy” at Auburn that allows students to replace their grade by repeating a course in which they earned a “D” or an “F.”  Before your advisor can process a GAP, you must watch the GAP video and take a quiz to learn about this policy.  You can find the GAP video and quiz on your AU Access Academics tab.
  • Change of Major : Email your advisor to schedule an appointment to discuss a change of major.
  • Overload Request : Students who wish to register for more than 18 hours in a semester will need an overload request. Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and have a recommendation from their advisor to qualify for a course overload. First meet with your advisor for approval, then email Assistant Dean, Dr. Janet Moore, ( jcm0093@auburn.edu ) to make this request.

Q: What is Engineering Academic Coaching?

A: Academic coaching in the College of Engineering is one arm of the Engineering Academic Support Program (EASP). The mission of the EASP is to serve students across all engineering majors, maintaining a strong focus on assisting the pre-engineering student. Academic Coaching sessions are designed to be a one-on-one process to help students examine academic strengths, concerns, and perceived barriers to success. Individualized Academic Contracts/Goals are explored and developed, all of which are designed to increase academic confidence, performance and success in the engineering major of your choice.

 

Q: How Can I Meet with a Coach?

A: There are two avenues to Academic Coaching in the College of Engineering:

  1. Professional Referral through your Academic Advisor
  2. Student-initiated Self-Referral (follow the instructions below)

Q: What can I expect in my Academic Coaching appointment?

A: If you are a professionally referred student, you can expect to participate in a quick survey and an initial academic assessment process to identify your academic strengths and areas for improvement. These two process are fast and easy. Then you will develop goals for the term, review relevant academic policies (move-into-major, academic warning, academic suspension, use of GAP’s, etc.), determine a meeting schedule with your coach, and begin to immediately work on strategies to help manage your academic workload.

 

Q: Are Engineering Academic Coaching sessions free?

A: Yes, Engineering Academic Coaching is a free service for enrolled Engineering students. You may be professionally referred for coaching through your Academic Advisor or you may obtain a one-time meeting by making an appointment on your own through Advise Assist.

Q: If I have taken credit from another institution, how do I transfer that credit to AU?

A: In order to receive credit for coursework taken from another institution, YOU must have your official transcript sent from that institution. This will not be an automatic process- you must request that it be sent. If you are a current undergraduate student at Auburn, please have your transcripts sent to the following address: Office of the Registrar, 152 S. College St. Auburn, AL 36849. If you have the required course(s), you must call the department that houses the specific course for additional assistance.

  • Meet with your instructor. All instructors offer office hours and will answer questions and provide you with course-related feedback. Take advantage of this chance to learn from your instructor.
  • Individual departments keep a list of private tutors for hire if you are interested in this option.
  • The Samuel Ginn College of Engineering offers free Engineering Peer Tutoring. Let another successful engineering student who has taken and passed your course help. Appointments are available through Advise Assist.
  • You can meet with the Engineering Academic Coach for an academic success strategies session. Appointments are free and available through Advise Assist.
