Bluff Body Wakes & Wake Vortex Dynamics

Wake of a bluff body is characterized by a number of large and small coherent structures such as the von Karman vortices, and Kelvin-Helmholtz vortices etc. and the flow is a classic example of absolute instability. Fluid dynamics of bluff body wakes is challenging as the flow is complex and large scale changes occur with Reynolds number. In addition to the understanding of the wake, goals of the research presented here were to document effect of additional strains on the wake and wake modification using subtle changes in geometry.
